State Farm – Can i switch agents withing the company?

I know everybody has issues with insurance companies, but State Farm has been good to me for several years. Recently my agent retired, and I was assigned a new agent. To say the least, I find the new agent’s employees to be incompetent, and they are constantly harassing me to buy more insurance. My parents have their State Farm insurance through a family friend, and they love this agent and his employees. They never try to call them to sell them anything, and they are always trying to find ways to save them money. Can I switch agents within the State Farm company? And if so, will my policies be forwarded to the new agent or will I have to cancel to my existing policies, wait for a refund, pay for new policies upfront, etc? Thanks everyone for you help!!

Absolutely! You can do it in a couple of ways. First, you can call your current agent’s office & they can transfer your policies to the other agent. Or, if you don’t trust them to get it done for you, you can also check with the agent you to whom want to transfer to find out the number for "Agent Selection" (At least that’s what we call it in GA). They can make the transfer for you without having to contact the other agent’s office.

Transferring won’t change your policies at all. They will just disappear from the old agent’s system and show up on the new agent’s computer. You will get a notice from SF when the transfer is complete.

State Farm has captive agents who have agencies in their names, along with the name of State Farm. For Example, John Jones Agent, State Farm & address. However, neither John Jones nor State Farm appear in the corporate records of the Secretary of State, nor does either name appear in the Tax Records of the County?

State Farm in Katrina claims . . . is telling the Courts that the named agents are actually the individuals who own these agencies . . . but these individuals do not show up in any public records . . . as the owners of the agencies or of anything else.

Who actually owns the agencies which State Farm’s captive agents operate out of? How can we prove who owes these agencies . . . since State Farm is not telling even the Courts the truth?

Help needed from Katrina victims of State Farm.

agents own the agency, they buy into the franchise much like owning a mcdonalds. but state farm is the insurer, the contract is between the customer and state farm, not the agent

Car insurance question. Help desperately needed, please!?

Here’s the situation. Before I start here, I will say I have never sold a car/transferred insurance in my life until now (I’m 37) and I’m panicking. (Please don’t laugh; I am somewhat mentally disabled and have a hard time understanding business side of things). Please bear with me:

I have a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with 178,000 miles on it.

Last Friday, my husband’s brother decided to give his 2005 Hyundai Elantra (53,000 miles) to us as a free gift.

We decided to sell the Malibu to some friends of ours (with whom we have been friends for quite a few years).

My friends have already paid us and they have a Bill of Sale and next week we are getting a duplicate of the Chevy title in the mail (because we lost ours), at which time we will transfer.

Here is where the confusion begins: My mother-in-law (who is a retired State Farm insurance agent) drew up a Bill of Sale that indicated as its last sentence at the end, "Buyer will show proof of liability insurance at the time the car is received" (or something like that; I don’t have the Bill of Sale in front of me). We saw our friends today to get the Bill of Sale notarized (they already paid for the car; we’re just waiting for the title for the Malibu to arrive via mail, as mentioned above). Their insurance agent is about 90 miles away, I find out, and will need pictures of the car. Our friends insist that my mother-in-law is just "being a mom" since we’re new at such a transaction (our friends have owned and sold boats, cars, etc., so they are experienced at this, too), meaning that she’s being overcautious by saying they need to present proof of liability insurance at the exact time I give them the keys to the car. So, once I give them the title and the keys, are they responsible for when they get the car insurance?

My Hyundai is covered through my insurance agent (my mother-in-law called them and got coverage on it already), but she insists that I am not to get insurance verification on the Hyundai until the friends show proof of their insurance on the Malibu after they get possession of it. Is that correct, or is my mother-in-law just being overcautious? (I would think that once I switch the Malibu title to my friends’ name and give them the keys, that would relieve me of any responsibility any longer to the Malibu).

Help me, please. I am so confused; I have my mother-in-law telling me one thing, and my friends telling me another. Both sound correct.

So would I be right if I did these (in this exact order):
1) switch the title over to their name & give them the keys to the Malibu.
2) call my insurance agent and report that I sold my Malibu, and ask them to type insurance vertification for the Hyundai. (would I have to be present in person for them to type the verification for the Hyundai? Also, would my report of me selling the Malibu mean that they would cancel the insurance on it immediately?)

I am sorry this is so lengthy; I tried to explain this the best as I could. I just want to do what is correct in the eyes of the law.

The steps you outlined are the right ones. Once your MIL called to add the Hyundai,it was covered, even if you don’t have the insurance card, and once you sell the Malibu, it’s no longer your responsibility.

You don’t have to be present for the verification on the Hyundai; calling the agent is enough. The agent should send you a copy of the change request adding it and cancelling the Malibu.

Question for Car Insurance Agents (I have State Farm) -?

I am a little taken back by my SF agent the other day – I called to report that a heavy item had toppled over in my garage putting a decent little dent in my vehicle. This, the agent agreed, was Comprehensive, which I have $100 deductible for. I got an estimate and not surprisingly with body shop costs nowdays, the total repair cost is going to be about $600. (that is a whole nother story the outrageous over-pricing of replacement body parts and labor to fix cars, a real scam) – Now, I have had State Farm since I was 16 years old, I am almost 50 yrs old now – I stayed with them (same agent/office even !!) through my parents who had them since 1940 !!
I have not had any claims for damages to my vehicles other than a chip in windshield once. So I report this dent to my agent yesterday – and the response was "Well, you know, if its over $100 to fix, there’s a good chance your annual premium will increase !!" I was SO MAD. I said "what about my 34 years with you and no claims? other companies like allstate and many others now have "accident forgiveness" if you’ve had no claims in xx years, other companies are doing refunds for not having accident claims. I said "Doesn’t state farm have ANY of these policies too?" WHY would you increase my policy costs for one darn claim under Comprehensive in all these years. He then stuttered and said, "well, well, it might, or it might not, we don’t know until corporate does its annual updates and policy reviews". As if "he" has no control over it. Is this agent totally bullshitting me here people? I am really PO’d. Talk about NO customer nicety, loyalty, or consideration. Not even trying to be "helpful" with a claim. Just "scare tactics" to disuade me from filing a claim at all !!! What the heck is going on here? Can some other agents explain? I was told by several people in the insurance business that my claim under Comprehensive would NOT cause an increase in my policy rate. HELP !! (thanks to agents, state farm especially) who can answer my questions/concerns.
Thanks to everyone for such great information – a real eye opener – and yes, it was the "actual agent" at my state farm office – we have had this person (including all my parents insurance with them too) for about 20 years or more now. THIS is why I am so taken back by this statement (or idle threat maybe so I would not file the claim?) that my rate could well increase if I file this Comp claim. REALLY burns me and I am shocked if they were just trying to lie about it to intimidate into not filing. Either way this person really Sucks.

granted most comprehensive claims will not raise your premium. but it maybe that State Farm has had a large increase in claims this past year that they will be charging higher premiums, be if for filing a claim or no claims.

now you have several factors in your favor. you have had 2 comprehensive claims; 1 for glass and now for the fallen item that fell from your garage. if you state no liability claims in 34 years, you should be considered a "preferred risk".

get on the phone and talk to an independent agent that handles many insurance companies for a quote. you want to avoid allstate, american family since they are like state farm and can only insure the one company they write business for.

you may find that your premium with other companies to be several hundred dollars less than what you are paying now. now that wont change state farms premium, since they have usually locked in what they will charge.

the only advantage to state farm and the others is that you do everything with the agent 1st. whereas in other companies, you might have to go to the company itself.

If someone must be put in charge of the farm succession process who will keep mom and dad in the loop, keep the advisors moving forward, and keep an eye out for successful succession strategies being used by their peers for ideas that work – who should it be? The planning coordinator’s job is to ask questions, assemble information, talk with everyone involved, etc.
