Why do so many Insurance Companies have the word "farm" in their names?

FARM Bureau, FARMers, State FARM… I’m sure there are others that I haven’t heard of.

Farm Bureau was founded by farmers. They founded the company to provide insurance for their equipment and farm products. Farm Bureau’s are domestic carriers – that means each Farm Bureau is its own separate company (in each state). So they were all founded at different times.

State Farm was founded by a farmer – George Mercherle in 1922. It was founded to serve the auto insurance needs of farmers.

Farmers was founded in 1928 under the name Farmers Exchange Insurance as an automobile insurance company.
