The regulations differ from State to State but in California the insurance company you purchased from are required to notify the DMV that you have purchased insurance from them. Oddly enough, if you went back the next week and cancelled the policy they are not required to report that. Has always confused me why they have to notify DMV in the first place because the DMV does not keep detailed records of what insurance you purchased and from which company you got it.

Beginning in January 2006 the CA DMV required all insurance companies to report insurance transactions to them electronically. So the DMV will know if you do or do not have insurance…it takes them awhile. I just received notice from them last night on a non-op car I have telling me my insurance company advised them the car wasn’t insured…it hasn’t been uninsured for 5 months. Doesn’t matter though, we haven’t lived in CA for a year and the car is dead.

Depends on what state you're in. In NY, insurance companies electronically notify DMV of all insurance information especially not payment of premiums.

might depend on the state you live in. Indiana won't let you register without insurance, but insurance on your previous vehicle would cover the new one for a week or two grace period.

100 years ago, the US was mostly an agrarian society. Lots of farms. Plus, farms make people comfortable. All those cute animals.

Some “government farmers” see NAIS as a foregone conclusion too. They just want to keep the tax-funded gravy train a-chuggin’ and will force NAIS on everyone if it means they still get their services.
