"I don't believe anybody thinks about not being able to meet expenses," said John Henry, a 38 year old office worker who was unable to work for two months due to a back surgery. "I was in great health

before the operation."

Henry spent two weeks in hospital and, unable to walk without assistance, had to go to a rehabilitation hospital. Even after all this care, he was unable to return to work.

But He Had Disability Insurance

Fortunately, he had decided to buy disability a couple of years earlier. "I sent them a letter about my disability and said I needed to make a claim on my disability policy."

The reality is that Canadians have a one in three chance of needing disability for at least 90 days, if not more, some time before they retire. You need to plan like John Henry to avoid financial death.

Some Disability Tips:

· Assess your risk: One in three can become disabled during their work career. Some disabilities last a lifetime.

· Assess your finances: Work out how long you can survive financially without disability insurance.

· Call your broker: Sometimes you can purchase disability at work. The rate is cheaper but if you change jobs, you lose the coverage.

· Have personal disability coverage: If you have personal disability coverage, you can take it from job to job. And as a bonus, the payments are tax free!

How To Choose Your Disability Coverage

Talk to a broker who handles several companies and compare their offerings. You are under no pressure to buy and the premiums may not differ that much, in which case, you should choose the strongest company. You want your insurer to still be in the business if you ever need to rely on your disability insurance.
